Draft Concept Paper(In Brief)

The Formation of the Remitters' League

Proposed Names:

La Liga de Sostenedores de la Comunidad Mundial
    Global League of Community Sustainers
Pandaigdigang Liga ng mga Tagapagaruga ng Komunidad

What is it?

The League/La Liga is a vehicle that can express the collective power (economic and political) of remitters globally, develop a transnational justice agenda of those who have been displaced under corporate-driven globalization. It networks Million Dollar Clubs (MDCs) and its allies globally as an economic leverage to realize fundamental human rights for all.

It is multi-ethnic, multi-national, and global, with important organizing foci in the countries of the global North, and with families in communities of origin in the global South.

What is its mission?

In general is to advance the collective interest of this new constituency and help develop alternative transnational economic, political, cultural, and social relationships, strategies and institutions.

What are its goals in the next period?

At this stage of its development, the Legue/La Liga's role is to accomplish the following:

  1. Give guidance to the Corporate Accountability campaign, including taking leadership in negotiating with the money transfer companies in pursuing adoption of an industry-wide Transnational Community Benefits Agreement
  2. Give guidance to the development of the Community Reinvestment Fund to ensure that it reflects the interests of the constituency. This includes ensuring that the majority of its governing board comes from the League/La Liga
  3. Develop a plan for the development of the League in order to best accomplish its vision and mission, and propose this plan at the League’s founding meeting, tentatively scheduled for Spring, 2008
An Organizing Committee (OC), convened at the August 25-27, 2006 Strategy Gathering, was formed to shepherd the League/La Liga’s development. Members include:
